Bolstered by union households and blue collar workers, Michigan voted for every Democratic Presidential candidate between 1988 and 2016. However, this past November Trump carried the state by 10,000 votes. According to Senator Gary Peters, the last Democrat to win statewide, a lack of true voter contact is to blame for the Democratic Party’s problems.
In an interview with Vox, Senator Peters explained that the Clinton Campaign forgot many of the basics of campaigning 101. They utilized voter profile models to identify supporters, but didn’t follow through with actual voter contact. Though models are important tools, they need to be supported through conversations and relationships. As Peters states, “If you’re on the ground actually talking to voters, and you’re recording that information and getting it back, it’s either going to prove your model right or prove your model wrong. If your model’s not right, then you better think about doing something else.”
Senator Peters emphasized that campaigning, at its core, still requires person-to-person contact. The voter contact services at Winning Connections provide this connection and create opportunities to deliver a message that persuades voters. Don’t forget the basics and check out our services page.
