In 2008, one of the smartest moves I made in my campaign for Congress was hiring Winning Connections. 

I am often asked why I joined Winning Connections after being a politician. For sure, public service is in my DNA—from the mid-‘80s when I led a regional War on Poverty agency to being minority leader in the Michigan state Senate, to serving in the 111th Congress, and eventually as the Democratic nominee for Governor of Michigan.  

I am grateful for the difference I made as an elected official—like voting to pass the Affordable Care Act—and I’m excited about the contributions I’m now making behind the scenes. 

I first worked with Winning Connections when they helped me beat incumbent Tim Walberg to flip Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. Winning Connections’ seasoned phone agents had live, interactive conversations with tens of thousands of voters who were key to my razor-thin margin of victory.   

Senator Jon Tester said about his race, “I wouldn’t have won without Winning Connections.” Ditto! And that win allowed me to cast key votes historic legislation. 

And when I ran for governor in 2014, their 600,000 live calls were the reason I nearly defeated a popular incumbent in a tough year for Dems.   

Three years ago, a happenstance meeting with John Jameson and a Congressional candidate resulted in me pitching Winning Connections based on my experience. John, who is President of Winning Connections, recognized my sincerity and passion and offered me the opportunity to join his cause. 

I’ve always liked and admired John, and after meeting the Winning Connections team, I was sold! I can say with certainty three years after joining the firm and racking up some big wins: Winning Connections is the gold-standard for mobilizing voters and constituents to take action. 

During my time here, we’ve helped elect Kyrsten Sinema to the U.S. Senate, reversed gerrymandering of Michigan districts, lowered prescription drug prices, enacted criminal justice reforms, and so much more. 

I can’t wait to see what opportunities 2020—the most important cycle of my lifetime—will bring.
