For the last 7 years, Milwaukee County has been under orders from the Department of Natural Resources to either repair the Estabrook Dam or tear it down. The dam threatens wildlife in the river by encouraging the growth of algae, pollutants, and other toxic contaminants, and increases the risk of flooding for homeowners in the area.
Removing the dam would make the Milwaukee River cleaner, safer, and better for local residents to enjoy. Repairing the dam would be much more expensive, leaving taxpayers with a $5 million bill and decades of extra maintenance costs.
Winning Connections is proud to have worked with the Milwaukee Riverkeepers to connect constituents to their Councilmember to urge them to finally remove the dam. Ultimately, the City Council voted 12-2 to keep the Milwaukee River clean and save taxpayers money.
