In 2016, the 21st Century Cures Act was introduced in Congress to allocate an additional $4.8 billion toward cancer research at the National Institutes of Health. However, key members of Congress opposed this additional funding for lifesaving cancer research, and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network decided it was necessary to drum up grassroots support to sway these members.
Winning Connections connected thousands of constituents over the phone to 26 members of Congress urging them to support the 21st Century Cures Act. The calls were delivered in the weeks prior to the lame-duck vote on the Act.
The Act passed, fully funding the NIH and continuing the battle against deadly diseases.
