Winning Connections knows the best political defense is a strong offense. After working with Maryland LCV to pass anti-pollution legislation in the Maryland legislature last cycle, our goal was to defeat all repeal efforts and to strengthen the law in order to maintain the increased limits on drainage and fertilizer runoff into the Chesapeake Bay, one of the nation’s most at-risk ecosystems.
Winning Connections spoke with voters around the state in key legislators’ districts and explained that recent changes to pollution control measures were hanging in the balance. We were able to contact thousands of these voters directly to their lawmakers so they could ask them to support the tougher law, with the goal of protecting the Chesapeake.
Direct political pressure paid off, and the environmental regulations were secured. “We were really playing defense,” Brent Bolin of the League of Conservation Voters told the Capital Gazette. “Our goal was to keep the clean water laws intact, and we succeeded.”
