Case Study

Enacting Bail Reform in New York

We worked with New Yorkers United for Justice to pressure lawmakers to restrict the use of cash bail.

Challenge

In New York, cash bail laws allowed people with enough money to prepare for their court appearance at home, while those that couldn’t afford to pay stayed in jail and risked losing their jobs, homes, and families.

Our Role

We worked with New Yorkers United for Justice to send hundreds of constituent calls per day to targeted state senators asking them to reform this unfair and outdated criminal justice system.

Outcome

Lawmakers voted in favor of reforms, and now, the practice is prohibited in more than 90% of cases. New York is one step closer to a justice system that treats all people equally, regardless of economic status.
