“Winning Connections was a key partner in stopping the AHCA, helping us in our mission to protect cancer patients and survivors.” – American Cancer Soceity Caner Action Network, Inc.
Last week, House Republicans were on the verge of fulfilling their 7 year promise to repeal and replace Obamacare. However, their repeal and replace bill, the American Health Care Act, drew concerns from physicians, hospitals, insurers, and was only supported by 17% of Americans according to a Quinnipiac poll.
Tens of thousands of constituents called their members of Congress to voice their concerns. Winning Connections partnered with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACSCAN) to stop the bill, which would have made healthcare coverage unaffordable for millions of older and low-income cancer patients, survivors and their families. Winning Connections and ACSCAN helped citizens voice their concerns to their Representatives.
The immense pressure worked, and a coalition of Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in opposition. Knowing that they didn’t have the votes, GOP leadership scrambled at the last minute to avoid an embarrassing loss on the House floor. On Friday afternoon, Speaker Ryan scrapped the bill and stated that “Obamacare is the law of the land.”
We were proud to work with ACSCAN to stop this dangerous legislation and protect the healthcare of millions Americans.
