In a 2008 study that we conducted with University of Notre Dame Professor David Nickerson, we learned that a longer, interactive phone call that makes use of implementation intentions is nearly twice as effective as a standard, 30 second GOTV call. Against a control group in a competitive primary state, voters who received a longer GOTV call with a script that triggered implementation intentions were 5% more likely to turnout to vote on election day. In a close race, a GOTV calling program that uses the best techniques is often the difference between victory and defeat.
