Right wing state legislators across the country have been pushing egregious bills which would limit women’s access to reproductive health care.

Politicians are attempting to cut funds for basic preventive care in Montana; ban all coverage of abortion for women getting their insurance from the new health care marketplaces in Pennsylvania; require health centers to meet building standards that have nothing to do with patient care or safety in Indiana; and pass a bill full of regulations that could cause providers of safe and legal abortion to close in Alabama.

Today, Governor Hickenlooper proved that common sense gun reform is achievable. The Governor signed three bills into law in Denver; limits on ammunition magazines to 15 rounds, expansion of background checks for all gun purchases, and a requirement charging gun buyers for background checks. Such leadership does not occur without bold action by state legislators, grassroots mobilization, or the voices of concerned citizens.

In 2008, Campaigns & Elections Magazine (then Politics Magazine) began annually honoring political consultants with Best-In-Class Reed awards. On Tuesday, August 7, John Conyers won his 24th consecutive Democratic Primary in Michigan, continuing his stint as the 2nd longest serving Congressman in office. After GOP-led redistricting stretched Congressman Conyers' district away from his safe, urban home of Detroit and into the suburbs, many believed that the opportunity was ripe for challengers to unseat the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee.

On April 18, the EPA issued new rules that would regulate air pollution that is caused by fracking and drilling for natural gas and oil. Of the over 13,000 fracking wells drilled annually, only about half have measures to contain dangerous pollutants that can cause asthma attacks and cancer. In places like rural Wisconsin, smog levels have been reported to be higher than downtown Los Angeles due to the massive influx of fracking sites in the past four years.

Yesterday, the Senate approved the RESTORE Act amendment to the Transportation funding bill, an important measure designed to ensure BP's reimbursement fines are dispursed directly to the Gulf states affected by the BP oil spill, rather than being bottle-necked and squandered in the US Treasury.
