Over two years ago, Winning Connections worked with a Marijuana Policy Project backed-team to support a ballot measure in Maine to legalize marijuana, also known as Question 1. The campaign included a robust persuasion messaging and outreach component, and a turnout program to get people to the polls. The efforts paid off massively, as we were able to help them win a very close election (the measure passed by 3995 votes, or 0.6%).
Despite the result, the governor has refused to act and implement the legislation. However, with public support for legalization only continuing to grow, the Maine Legislature voted to overturn the governor’s veto – House: 109-39, Senate: 28-6 – on Wednesday, May 2, setting the state on a path to the legal sale and production of recreational marijuana. We are thrilled the Legislature voted to override the governor’s veto, and are very proud of our efforts in helping this finally become a reality.
